It Needs a Battery - Chemistry Demonstration

Watch as a colorless solution changes to blue when a 9V battery is dropped into the beaker. The blue color then fades when the battery is removed. A red cloth is dipped into the colorless solution and appears to absorb the elusive blue color. The blue cloth is dipped into another beaker where the blue color disappears until it is rung out of the cloth over the final beaker. This trick is a great example of electrochemistry, acids, bases and indicators.

Η διάβρωση των μετάλλων σε υδατικό περιβάλλον είναι ένα φαινόμενο ηλεκτροχημικής φύσης, δεδομένου ότι περιλαμβάνει αντιδράσεις μεταφοράς ιόντων ή ηλεκτρονίων.

Μια δράση, η οποία εξελίσσεται από μια κατάσταση Α, προς μια κατάσταση Β, είναι θερμοδυναμικά δυνατή μόνον όταν η μετάβαση από την κατάσταση Α στη κατάσταση Β συνοδεύεται από μείωση ελεύθερης ενθαλπίας ΔG,του συστήματος. Στην περίπτωση των ηλεκτροχημικών αντιδράσεων ισχύει:

ΔG=-n F E

όπου n ο αριθμός των ηλεκτρονίων που ανταλλάσσονται κατά την αντίδραση ,το δυναμικό ισορροπίας μεταξύ των κατάσταση Α και Β και F η σταθερά του Faraday ίση με 96500 C.

Η μετάβαση από το Α στο Β δεν είναι δυνατή παρά μόνον όταν η διαφορά των δυναμικών ισορροπίας μεταξύ των καταστάσεων Β και Α είναι αρνητική, δηλαδή όταν Ε_Α>Ε_Β. Η παραπάνω συνθήκη αν και αναγκαία ,δεν είναι ικανή για την πραγματοποίηση της δράσης A->B. Πρέπει, επιπλέον η ταχύτητα της δράσης να μην είναι αμελητέα
